Trekking to discover the Walser villages

By: Comune di Ayas

rascard

A trek in the Walser villages is a great way to explore the ancient culture and traditions of the Walser people. The Grande Sentiero Walser is a network of paths that connects the ancient villages of Switzerland and Italy.

This itinerary crosses Valtournenche, Valle d'Ayas and Valle di Gressoney and offers an interesting mix of local folklore, scenic beauty, a bit of history and a mountain experience.

The walk follows the signs of Walser life and culture in the region, and visitors can accompany themselves with a naturalistic guide to live a cultural experience in full Walser style more intensely.

Besides trekking, there are other activities to do in these villages. You can explore the ancient culture and traditions of the people by visiting the rascards, the ancient houses built in typical Walser style.

A testimony of the passage of the Walser community in Val d'Ayas can be found in the villages of Mascognaz, Cuneaz, Frantze, Soussun, Lignod and Antagnod. In these villages time seems to have stopped in the 13th century: a few houses, nature living in perfect symbiosis with man, among vegetable gardens, shepherds and Walser architecture, which has remained almost intact and well preserved; traces of antiquity that live in the present with harmony of tradition and historical continuity. In perfect Walser style, the hamlets possess all the elements of subsistence and self-sufficiency, community ovens for bread, fountains, stables, places of worship.

Whether on foot or riding an e-bike, you can find tailor-made trekking tours to explore the Walser villages and their scenic beauty.
